Group Communication Theory
Everyone has a horror story from working in a group. Did you get stuck with all boys and you were the only girl? You ended up doing all the work because everyone else just goofed around? Or maybe you were so shy you barely spoke the entire time! Groups are a fact of life. Whether it's your family, friends, a team, club, or assigned at school, things get complicated with there are three or more people together.

This document explains what a group is and talks about the normal group life cycle. Most groups have a forming period where they come together with a common purpose. The storming group can be a smooth, easy process, or long and full of thunder! This is when group members disagree about their roles and the group's rules. Norming needs to happen so strong rules and roles are in place; finding out what's "normal" for your group will prevent future storming. Finally, performing is when the group is functioning together appropriately to meet the common goal.

Group Life Cycle Mini-Book
So a group comes together, fights about a problem, figures out how to solve the problem, and then works together towards a happy ending. Does that sound familiar? It should! That's also the plot of most books, television shows, and movies. So why not create our own mini-book or story to show our knowledge of the group life cycle, roles within a group, and dialogue? Heck, if these make the cut, they could also make some dough!

Another good tool to aid your brainstorming: the rubric! It explains how you will be assessed. You will, like every 80% assignment, be asked to self-assess yourself. This begins a conversation between us about your present level.
