Literacy: Why do we have to learn this stuff?

Make a new list! Write down five jobs that you may want to have in your life. Next to each profession explain in one sentence why you need literacy in that job. For example:
1) Professional Athlete: I need strong literacy skills to be a football player so I can read my multi-million dollar contracts and make sure I'm making good legal decisions.

Building Academic Vocabulary
Which is more important: knowing a little bit about a lot of things, or a lot about a few things? This is the classic arguement of "depth" versus "breadth" in education. The Park Hill School District agrees with renowned researcher Robert Marzano who studied the debate and found that students learn more quickly and retain information longer if the teacher focus on teaching a few key concepts in depth rather than trying to "cram" a lot of information into a short period of time. In this class, we will focus on eight learning goals and nine specific vocabulary terms. These are called "Building Academic Vocabulary" or BAV for short.
