Intrapersonal Communication

Intrapersonal Communication is communicating with ones' self. I know, it sounds like you've gone crazy! But think about it, everytime you pick out what you're going to wear, practice a difficult conversation in your head, solve a math problem, write in your planner, or journal, you're communicating with yourself.

The key to a balanced person and successful intrapersonal communciation is to make sure your "inside" and your "outside" match. Do you show everyone in your life the real you, or do you sometimes feel like you're wearing a mask that is hiding the real you?

The Meyrs-Briggs Personality Inventory is widely regarded as one of the best personality tests around. Take the free online version to get a starting point to figuring out who you are on the inside and outside:

Self-Concept

Now it's time to talk about your self-concept. How do you view yourself? There are three elements: physical, intellectual, and social.

Physical Self: How you look and what you do with your body. Examples: tall, athletic, plays soccer, healthy, German, long brown hair, pale skin.

Intellectual Self: Your strengths, weaknesses, and strong beliefs. Examples: good at creative writing, loves public speaking, enjoys singing, struggles with math, can't spell very well, believes in freedom of speech, patriotic, strong religious/political beliefs

Social Self: Your personality, the way you interact with others. Examples: shy, outgoing, likes large groups, loud, bossy, a leader, happy, intellectual, sarcastic

Let's get ready to think about ourselves! Using Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, we're going to brainstorm your self concept. In class I will show you how to rename the three different sheets. Then, we'll use the numbered cells to get to 100! There has to be at least 10 items in each list, but the three lists must add to make at least 100 ways you and others describe you.

Project:
To assess your knowledge of yourself, each student has been given a folder. Please use the folder (front, back, inside) to create a visual or verbal representation of you.

The visual representation means 10 or more pictures (drawn, cut out, or printed out) that represent your three different selves. Once you have them on the folder, please label each picture. That means 30 pictures total if you are doing the minimum! To help keep yourself organized, consider labeling each picture as you go and putting each category of pictures in one specific place.

The verbal representation means 15 or more words and phrases (drawn, written, cut out, or printed out) that represent your three different selves. This means 45 words or phrases total if you are doing the minimum! To keep yourself organized consider making each category a different color or having them in one specific place on your folder.

Self Concept Reassessment

Does your grade no longer reflect your actual learning? At Lakeview, we believe that students learn in different time frames. That means you may have time to reflect, relearn, be retaught, and basically come further in your understanding of a concept.

If your self concept assessment does not reflect where you are now in your understanding of the concept and you would like to reassess with different evidence, then please fill out the form below. You must submit your request within two weeks of the original due date. That does not mean the reassessment is due within two weeks, I just need to be aware of your desire to reassess within that period of time.
